Hebel (or aerated concrete) is a concrete medium. It is created
by mixing sand, lime and cement with aluminium. This causes a
che
mical reaction between the different compounds to form the air
cells in the concrete. The hebel mix is then placed in an autoclave
which hardens the material.
Developed
Hebel was developed by Josef Hebel. Josef was a building
contractor in Germany who saw a need for an alternative strong,
cost effective building material.
Main Uses
Hebel is mainly used as a construction material. However because
it is very easy to manipulate it is a perfect medium for
carving.
Characteristics
Hebel is a lightweight material because the air cells are evenly
spaced due to the autoclaving process. Hebel has excellent
insulation and sound properties.
